MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new professional sports team will soon call the city of Memphis home.

The United Soccer League confirmed to WREG Tuesday it has given the go ahead for a new team to be established right here in the Bluff City.  The expansion franchise will join the USL in 2019 and reportedly play its games at AutoZone Park.

“It’s just another example of our momentum in the City of Memphis,” Mayor Jim Strickland said in a Facebook post. He said the city had worked to help make it a reality.

The USL is a Division II professional soccer league, with 30 teams located in major cities across the United States and Canada including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Charleston, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Reno, Sacramento, San Antonio and Tampa Bay.

Additional expansion teams have been approved for Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Las Vegas and Fresno.

The USL just wrapped up its 2017 season on Monday night with Louisville winning the USL Cup in front of more than 14,000 fans.

An official announcement by the USL is expected in January.
