PORT GIBSON, Miss. — The hanging death of Otis Byrd has been ruled a suicide.

The Department of Justice has ruled there is no evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights charges in his death.

Byrd, a 54-year old black male. was found hanging from a tree in Port Gibson, Mississippi, March 19, 2015.

Justice Department investigators launched an investigation to see if the death was a homicide and racially motivated.
