SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A former nature center at the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park was destroyed Tuesday morning.

The park is located off Highway 51 near Millington.

The building has been used strictly for storage for several years according to Kim Schoetzow with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

The Shelby County Fire Department arrived just before 10 a.m. and the building was fully engulfed.

Originally we were told the visitor center was destroyed, but that was later corrected.

Crews went into defensive mode to stop the fire from spreading.

It’s believed the fire had been burning for some time.

The park is about 13,000 acres and features hiking, horse riding and camping.

There were no injuries.
