FAST FACTS:
20,000 or so early voters by Friday morning Early voting ends on October 10th Special election is October 15th
(Memphis 10/02/2009) Maybe they were just trying to be polite.

Maybe the people at the Charles Carpenter for Mayor headquarters aren't fond of the Watchdog, and wanted to think if a polite way for me to hit the road. What they came up with was "We are all very busy today, too busy to talk to you." It made no difference that it was only 1:00pm, and we had all afternoon, and I was going to be as flexible as possible. They were busy, too busy to talk.

There are less than two weeks to go before special election day. And of all the people working Whitehaven, the Carpenter camp is working it very hard. They have a few vans which they will run out to voters homes and drive the voter to the polls. But almost all the serious candidates have offices located in Whitehaven.

Political columnist Jackson Baker disagrees with those who say to win this race, you've got to nail Whitehaven. "It's a big sprawling place," Baker says, "...but frankly every neighborhood is important. None more so than the other. Carpenter is working Whitehaven hard as there are signs of his activities here."

Baker agrees with the results of a recent News Channel 3/Commercial Appeal poll on the mayors race. It showed AC Wharton with 45% of the vote. Baker says just about every poll he's seen has Wharton with roughly the same amount of votes. "I think Myron Lowery's made some gains in the last week," he says, "...and if he had a lot more time he could make this race really interesting. But I still don't think he's going to be close."

Baker says the mayor's race in Whitehaven reminds him a bit of the race between 9th District Congressman Steve Cohen and challenger Nikki Tinker in 2008. "During early voting, it appeared as though Tinker was closing the gap between her and Cohen," Baker said. On election day, Baker says "Cohen defeated her by a bigger margin than predicted."

With only 20,000 people voting so far in early election, there's a chance, according to Jackson Baker, that maybe some of A C 's voters are staying home, thinking the race is won. That's not good, but Baker says "When the rank and file come out on the 15th, I think they'll show how much they think of A C, not only in Whitehaven, but in every other section of the city.
