Wharton Talks Vision for City

  • Big plans in store for the City of Memphis, as Mayor AC Wharton spoke this morning in front a group of professionals.
  • He says efficiency, public safety and possibly even a tax increase are on his agenda as he pushes full speed ahead.

(Memphis, 11/18/2009) Transparency, ethics and efficiency: they're at the top of Mayor A C Wharton's to do list .

"Its somewhat oximoronic with a few exceptions speak in terms of secret public records, I've never really understood that," said Wharton about transparency.

Wharton says he is rebuilding a trust in city government. He says he has already started by signing the transparency order. And next week, he plans on signing a executive order on ethics. All to make sure people in the City of Memphis are more confident in their government.

"I get the feeling that once Mayor Herenton started speaking of leaving a lot of folks kind of went into the hold mode. Why should I do this? What am I going to get out of this? I'm just going to wait" added Wharton.

Wharton spoke to a group of professionals from both leadership academy and leadership Memphis.

"I think we all know would like to know a city government that's sharing with us: A lot of things about the contracts. Just being transparent," said audience member Hazel Burks.

"Find areas and way where government can work together and benefit. When you build a bridge like that, you're building a relationship for other things to happen," said volunteer Wayne Shannon.

Wharton applauded the outpouring of support at the Memphis Animal Shelter...encouraging the same support for human life in Memphis. And he says the key to economic development and education in the bluff city all lie in public safety.

Mayor Wharton announced a possible mid-term tax increase. He says its all depends on whether the city has to pay the county for school funding.
