FAST FACTS:
  • A 10 hour stand off in Desoto County comes to an tragic end
  • Police say a man barricaded himself in a house and refused to come out
  • While authorities negotiated with the suspect, dozens of people who live close by were evacuated

(Walls, MS 10/23/09) It was a long night for Jordan Capers, "We were up about 12:58 last night and heard all the commotion going on and I woke him and told him about the swat being outside."

His family lives across the street from where the Desoto County sheriff says 31year-old Alvin Walker's girlfriend called police. Walker had locked himself in a house and threatened to hurt himself.

"About 8:30 we got a call that an individual had barricaded himself in a house, the homeowner had called us and they were concerned about what was going on," said Sheriff Rasco.

Negotiators worked to contact Walker, but got no response. Walker threatened to hurt deputies if they entered the house. The sheriff says he took that threat seriously after reviewing walker's lengthy record. A record including robbery and auto burglary charges, that he was indicted on just two weeks ago in Obion County, Tennessee.

Meanwhile, dozens of residents that live close to the house were asked to leave their homes for safety reasons. Others were asked to stay inside.

Several departments, including Desoto, Southaven and Shelby Counties used robots and flash bombs to encourage walker to come out of the house.

After a couple hours of no movement and no contact from Walker, the SWAT team entered the house.

"We found him upstairs underneath the bed, where he was deceased," said Rasco.

Capers got a short two hours of sleep during the over 10 hour ordeal and quite the crime scene outside his front door.

"It's the first time I've ever seen it in person before."
