Recovery Is Slow For Tornado Victims In The Mid-South
FAST FACTS:
  • Several tornadoes destroyed and damaged homes in the midsouth in late July
  • The recovery has been slow so far for homeowners in one of the hardest hit areas
  • Some Olive Branch, MS residents say it could be months before they are back in their homes

(Olive Branch, MS-8/27/09) Nearly a month after several twisters touched down in the Mid-South, homeowners are just starting to recover.

One of the hardest hit areas was in the College Crossing subdivision in Olive Branch, Mississippi where several homes were destroyed and more than a dozen heavily damaged in the storm.

The damage to Henry and Shirley Garrett's house was so bad they had to move out, but they still visit their home every day to take care of their yard.

Nearly four weeks later they're still finding glass and other debris from the twister, but say it's a big improvement.

"We've had the roof replaced, they gutted out the rooms where we had the water damage. They removed the carpet so now we are just waiting on this wall to be fixed," said Shirley Garrett.

Still, the Garretts are doing much better than some of their neighbors.

Both of the houses to the right of their home were destroyed by the tornado and will have to be torn down.

The Garretts say they can't wait to get back in their home.

"I want my home to look like it was, you know, before the storm," said Shirley Garrett.

"This whole wall has got to come out," said Kathy Brown.

Kathy Brown says it could be months before her daughter's home looks like it did before the storm.

Wednesday crews finally began replacing the roof, and contractors were there Thursday to assess the damage to the ceiling and walls.

Several windows were blown out of the house and there is water damage throughout.

Brown is glad after weeks of delays from her daughter's insurance company the home is finally getting repaired.

The Garretts are hoping they'll be back in their home before the holidays.

"We have family that enjoy and like to come over so I want everything to be back on track like before," said Shirley Garrett.

Six homes in Olive Branch were destroyed and another 15 damaged when that tornado tore through the city July 30.

It was the second tornado to hit Olive branch in two months. For more news updates from the field follow me at http://www.twitter.com/melissamoon3.
