Justin Timberlake's golf course hit with the public Timberlake fans showed up along with golfers Community expects course will mean big things for area
(North Shelby County, TN 07/25/2009) - Justin Timberlake's golf course opened to the public today. The 18-hole course is a total renovation of the Old Big Creek Golf Course in North Shelby County.
Justin Timberlake's Mirimichi golf course offers all kinds of challenges. There's one around every fairway bend and on opening day it was a challenge for the public to get a tee time.
"Our opening day today we booked up in about 15 minutes," said Greg King, Dir. Of Golf, Mirimichi.
Timberlake spent Friday giving the media a personal look at his course. On opening day, he played a round of golf with his parents and was less visible. Still, 13-year-old Gabrielle Cooper and her aunt, who both know very little about golf, managed to see their favorite pop star.
"I've seen him in concert a few times but this was a better experience," said Gabrielle.
One golfer joked about people wanting to get a look at the pop star on the course.
"I have a joke that I BYOJ. I brought my own Justin, my son here to play golf," said Sara Herbert.
All raved about the beauty of Mirimichi which in Cherokee means place of happy retreat. Timberlake went back to his Native American roots in picking the name. Giving each of the 18 holes a name of its own. We caught up with Memphian and former NBA star Anfernee Hardaway on the 10th hole. It's called Inadu (ee-nah-dew). It means snake. We don't know if he and his fellow golfers knew that. Still, they saw the beauty in it all.
"It's absolutely beautiful. Everybody on staff, Justin, everybody has done a great. I've seen a lot of courses transformed. I was actually coming out to Big Creek a lot and playing and now being Mirimichi. It's a totally different course. It's just so beautiful," said Hardaway.
They raved about the beauty and the locals raved about what Timberlake's newest business venture means for all of the area.
"With him opening the golf course you're gonna get a whole lot of new people and it's going to be a plus for the community," said Anthony Bledsoe, Woodstock Store and Deli.
Those golfing on opening day say the fees are reasonable for a course of this nature. It cost $59 during the week and $71 on the weekend.
This fall another 9 holes will open at Mirimichi. There are also discussions about eventually adding a spa on the Mirimichi grounds.
