Justin Timberlake Unveils News Golf Course Singer Wants Mirimichi To Be a Community Gathering Spot Timberlake's Family Hopes Golf Course Will Plant A Seed For Growth
(Memphis July 24, 2009) Just north of Memphis in the rural Woodstock community of north Shelby County, welcome to Justin Timberlake's Mirimichi.
It's a Native American word for "place of happy retreat", but for this international star with Millington, Tennessee roots this golf course is much more.
Timberlake said, "This has been a special event for us today and has been a special growth watching this turn into what its turned into." >
The Grammy winner is back home to help unveil the first, $16 million dollar phase of what could be called a golfer's utopia, but Timberlake says the idea started as a beautiful accident that grew into something bigger. He says it started with a phone call from his father.
Timberlake said, "I got a phone call that Big Creek was going to go under and they were going to auction it off. So we got into conversations and wondered what it would take to basically save it."
Formerly known as Big Creek golf course, Mirimichi is a luxurious and upscale par 72 golf course, which stretches more than 74-hundred acres. The project has been a dream of Timberlake, along with the Harlesses (his mother Lynn and stepfather, Paul).
Lynn Harless said, "We had our wedding reception here when it was Woodstock Hills 25 years ago and it holds a dear place in our hearts and Paul taught Justin and me to golf here. This has been a special place all our lives."
Justin's stepfather, Paul Harless, says they have even bigger plans.
Harless said, "Our role is not only to make this a great golf course, but to plant seeds of growth for this great community and great city."
They hope those seeds planted will also grow into an eco-friendly sanctuary, a gathering place for the community, and all golfers. In other words, a place for a happy retreat.
Timberlake said, "It's amazing to give back to your community, a place you grew up in. Right over there on the 10th tee is where I hit my first golf ball ever when it was Big Creek, but also put an idea and see it come about and hopefully become a benchmark."
Mirimichi will also be the headquarters for Justin Timberlake Enterprises. Opening day for the new golf course is July 25.
