(Hardeman Co., TN 05/15/2009) - Criminal justice teacher Michael Lain Teague is now a part of the system he taught students about at Middleton High School. Police arrested Teague on 2 separate rape charges involving 2 young men. One is a current student, the other one of his former students.
"Mr. Teague was arrested for shoplifting in a local grocery store in the Middleton area and out of the arrest information came about the alleged rape," said Delphus Hicks, Hardeman County Sheriff.
Teague worked as an assistant manager at a grocery store in Middleton and was arrested in a gift card scam. While investigating that theft charge, detectives found out he'd allegedly been fraudulently administering tests for sexually transmitted diseases to his students. In the offense report one victim said last May his teacher "Mr. Teague insisted he be tested for STD's and Mr. Teague stated he could give the test. The second victim told a similar story he said Mr. Teague informed him that he needed to be tested for STD's and he could administer the test on him. Both incidents occurred after school hours.
Anne Ingle, Hardeman County Schools, said, "A letter of termination has been sent to him so his status right now is he is no longer with the Hardeman County schools."
The termination is based on the theft charge. Teague plead guilty to that last month. He's ordered to pay restitution but now it appears that's only the beginning of his troubles. The former teacher is charged with rape and detectives say he violated his position of trust.
"Around this area it's kind of small town USA still and it's shocking that something like that would happen. You'd expect it in bigger towns," said Chris Hutchins, resident Hardeman Co., TN.
Teague is currently out of jail on a $50,000 bond. He plead not guilty during his arraignment. His trial date is set for September.
