(Downtown, Memphis 2/24/2009) Welcome to South Bluffs! High dollar homes and apartments, protected by warning signs and gates.

But all those security measures still haven't been tough enough to protect the cozy downtown community from crime.

"It seems to be escalating," said one renter who didn't want to be identified.

Three South Bluff's apartments were burglarized Friday morning between 7:20 and 8:15. Rattling one long-term renters sense of safety. "i'm a lot more vulnerable, aware and my sense is heightened ten times."

Barbara Osborne said, "It could have happened anywhere. They're good here. They watch out for everyone."

Security gates surround South bluffs. The bridge that flies over Riverside Drive to the property is locked from dusk till dawn. And entry into the complex is double gated to cut down on tailgating. All good precautions. But one major concern for some in the area is that there's no longer a security guard manning this post.

"An extra body roaming around is always a deterrent, especially someone in uniform,"

Some residents believe that could help keep unwanted guests from sliding in through the entrance gate like we did today. A move the unidentified renter has seen before.

It leaves wondering if management is being as proactive as it can to ensure safety. He says managements response to his concerns have been lackluster. Saying they blamed the problem on "Memphis being Memphis."

Our attempts at getting an answer weren't much better when we tried reaching them through the intercom, an employee hung up on us after saying.

"This is private property sir. I'm sorry I can't let you on."
