(Marshall County, MS, 6/16/2009) A suspected robber and possible murder suspect is hospitalized after his crime spree ends with a shootout involving a Tate County Sheriff's Deputy.
The gun fight happened at the intersection of Highway 309 and Wall Hill Road. That's in Marshall County.
Investigators aren't releasing any names, but they say the suspect's crime spree started in Tate County when he robbed a store in the Wyatt Community. That's about eight miles from the Marshall County line.
Deputies say the suspect stole some money from the store after he exchanged gunfire with the person behind the counter. Officials tell us no one was injured in that exchange.
A Tate County deputy spotted the suspect, racing down Wall Hill Road in his white Ford Expedition. After chasing him for a couple miles, investigators say the suspect tried to ram the officer. The two cars ended up spinning out.
The Marshall County Sheriff says the two men got out of their cars and started shooting at each other. He says the suspect was shot more than once. The deputy appeared to be wounded from the crash. Both men were airlifted to the Med.
Investigators are also looking into whether the robbery suspect will be charged with murder. A body was found in a car off Highway 4 in Tate County. That's close to where the robbery occurred.
The suspect is facing robbery charges as well as a charge for assaulting an officer. If investigators can connect the dots, he could also be charged with murder.
