(Memphis 07/19/2009) Memphis police say five men were terrorizing neighborhoods in Hickory Hill and East Memphis. Pages of affidavits show they were involved in robberies and carjackings. the most recent happened Tuesday. Documents show a woman was robbed at gunpoint in her Ridgeway Terrace Apartment Complex. Police arrest Michael Covington in connection with that crime.
"I heard about that too. They were saying be careful coming and going, especially at night or early in the morning to look out for your surroundings," said Ridgeway Terrace Resident Eddie Gray.
Two women sitting in a car on townhouse way learned that lesson the hard way, Monday. Police say Leonard Justice, Ernest Reed and another man armed with weapons robbed them.
Then earlier this month, police believe Cory barnett, Tobey Becton, jr and another man carjacked someone on Willow Lake Boulevard. The victim was hit in the faced and forced out of their SUV.
"We all work too hard to have someone rob you," said Gray.
Investigators followed up on leads that led to the arrest of the five men. Police now have a warrant issued for a sixth person, Mario Becton. News that five potential robbers and carjackers are off the streets sends a wave of relief through Hickory Hill and East Memphis.
"I am relieved that they have been caught and hopefully a lot of people in the area can have a little bit more peace of mind in regards to that," said Kimberly McClain.
