(Memphis 8/13/2009) - Parents want the best education for their kids.

Where their children go to school is important.

"Kids are younger they are like sponges. The more you teach them they just soak it up and they learn more." says Kenya Hudson, who has two children at Cherokee Elementary.

But 32 Memphis City Schools haven't made the academic mark and are on a high priority list.

Now students at schools like Cherokee Elementary are being allowed to transfer to schools in good standing.

Kenya Hudson wants to move her kids from Cherokee to Sherwood Elementary.

"I noticed their test scores. I did go on the internet and see that. Their TCAP scores were low at Cherokee." says Hudson.

Under No Child Left Behind, students at low performing schools are getting additional educational opportunites.

Students at Cherokee can attend schools like Goodlett, Sea Isle and Sherwood.

Manassess is also on the high priority list. So students can go to Carver, Mitchell or Westwood.

But many parents are sticking with their schools, as the system works out a plan.

Booker T Washington is getting new reading teachers and a graduation coach.

Cherokee Elementary is in line for additional literacy and math coaches.

Still some parents are determined to take up the transfer.

"Yes maam, I plan to take advantage of it. I want them to be at Sherwood, that's more convenient. I know the teachers. I know the performance." says Hudson.

Parents have until September 4th to turn in a transfer application at the school board.

Applications can be picked up at the school board office, on the school district's website or they can be mailed or faxed to parents.

The school system says parents can help low performing schools by checking homework, talking with teachers and making sure their kids are rested and have a good breakfast.
