(Memphis 9/17/2009) Candidates are reacting to the results of a poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research for WREG News Channel 3 and the Commercial Appeal.
A C Wharton has a commanding lead with 45% of the vote. Wharton's closest challenger is Carol Chumney, followed by Myron Lowery then Charles Carpenter.
"That's a pretty big number. Did you expect even bigger?" News Channel 3's Tom Powell asked Wharton after showing him the results of the poll.
"Yes," he responded. "We'll get even bigger. It's going to be bigger."
The poll results show Wharton with 45% of the white vote, and 48% of the black vote.
Chumney polled 27% of the white vote, and only 2% of the black vote. She dismisses the poll entirely. "This poll is grossly inaccurate. The voters need to disregard this poll and turn out in mass numbers to elect a mayor who is independent of the status quo," Chumney says.
Mayor Pro-Tem Myron Lowery came in third with 10% of the overall vote, with 7% of the white vote, and 12% of the black vote. "I'm going to work harder than I've been working on the campaign. I've done a lot for this city during the past 45 days. I need to get out and campaign harder," Lowery says.
Charles Carpenter came in fourth place with 5% of likely voters saying they'll vote for him in October. He polled 0% of the white vote, and 8% of the black vote. He says he's not surprised to see A C Wharton on top. "We're not surprised with those polls. I mean basically it's a popularity contest," Carpenter says.
Candidates will no doubt be focused on the 21% of voters who say they are still undecided. 11% of white voters are undecided, and 23% of black voters haven't decided who they'll vote for on October 15th.
- Poll shows Wharton with commanding lead
- Closest competitor in poll is Carol Chumney
- Myron Lowery ranks third in poll
