FAST FACTS:
(Cordova 10/29/2009) The owner of three pit bulls says his dogs aren't vicious even though they mauled a 62-year-old woman and her dog during a stroll through their Cordova neighborhood Thursday morning.
The victim and her pet suffered dozens of bite wounds. So many, in fact, doctors lost count..
The attack happened at the 8600 block of Oak Trail Lane. The 62-year-old victim spent the day in the trauma unit at The Med and was released about 9:00 p.m. Thursday night. Witnesses say the pack of pit bulls attacked her husky, Skye, first. As she tried to protect her pet., they began attacking her.
The vet says Skye is doing well, despite more than 100 bite wounds on his body..
"I really don't know what went on," said Andre Robinson, the owner of the pit bulls.
WREG cameras were there as the Shelby County Rabies Officer paid them a visit.
When asked about the attack, he told us, "I'm sick, I'm real sick about it, I'm at a loss for words now."
He admits his dogs also attacked a neighbor's pet in April. Charges were filed, but that case was dismissed two months later.
When asked if his dogs are vicious, he responded: "You're always gonna assume a pit bull is vicious because of its background. Really you can ask anyone, my pit bull ain't vicious at all unless you do something to provoke him."
Robinson says he locks them in cages in the garage. However neighbors say they were afraid something like this was going to happen because the dogs have gotten loose before. The deputy's report states the garage door was open when officers arrived.
Though Skye's wounds are hard to look at, what could've happened is even more painful to think about.
For now the three pit bulls are under quarantine at the Memphis Animal Shelter. They're being checked for rabies. So far charges have not been filed against the owners. Stay tuned to WREG. We'll keep you posted.
