(Cordova, TN 10/29/2009) Strange noises awoke Cordairo Armstrong and his sister up this morning.

"We always hear the dogs growling. She said they was growling differently so she looked out the window and saw someone screaming, help me help me," said Armstrong. His father immediately called 911.

"We saw her right there at the corner, laying over the dog with 3 pit bulls over her," he added.

He wanted to help the woman, but was fearful for his safety. He got in his car and drove across the street to try and scare the dogs. Police say the victim 62-year-old Helen Marshall was out walking her son's dog sky around 3 am, when the three pit bulls charged towards her dog and attacked it.

"She went over to protect her dog and that's when the pit bulls started attacking her," added Steve Shular from the Shelby Co. Sheriff's department.

When deputies arrived on scene, they say the victim was still on the ground and had a large amount of blood coming from her hands. And when the sheriff's deputy got out the car, one of the dogs charged right at him

"He had already gotten out with a shot gun because when you are dealing with three Pit Bulls, there is a potential for death," added Shular.

The officer fired at the dog and all three ran back into the fence behind the home, where they came from. None of the dogs were hurt and police say the dog owner's were not at home at the time. Animal control was dispatched to round up the dogs and took them to the animal shelter.

The sheriff's office say charges against the dog's owners will not be decided on, until further questioning. In the meantime, the victim is at the Med recovering from dog bites on her hands and forearms.
