"The first thing I had to do was ask for God's forgiveness, then ask for the forgiveness of my family. But I also want to ask for the forgiveness of the constituents I served."

Stanley says he told his wife about his affair in April, shortly after an alleged extortion plot brought it to light.

Three months later, now that it's front page news, the senator from Germantown has issued a resignation letter effective August 10th.

"When we fall and make mistakes we don't want it public. First I wanted to handle it at home with my wife."

Senator Stanley spent nine years in the House and Senate championing family values. Despite his fall from grace he stands by those values.

"Whatever I stood for and advocate I still believe to be true. And just because I fell far short of what God's standard was for me and my wife doesn't mean the standard is reduced in the least bit."

Conservative talk show host Ben Ferguson says he sympathizes with Stanley.

"I think it's easier to spout what you believe in than live it everyday. A lot of people, whether you're an alcoholic or whatever don't want their child to be an alcoholic. It's a lot easier to pronounce what you believe in than to live it.

Before Stanley issued his resignation, Shelby County Republican Chair Lang Wiseman urged Stanley to step down.

"We have to stand for something and for that two mean something it has to apply to everyone."

"When we do fall short we need to come to those we offended," explained Stanley. "God first, then those we offended with our action and seek forgiveness and give an apology."

Stanley did not elaborate on his plans once he leaves office.
