  • Police: Man shoots and kills his brother
  • Took Place in Grand Oaks Subdivision in Oxford, MS
  • Suspect was released from mental institution recently

(Oxford, Ms 9/25/2009) -- Oxford Police say one person was shot and killed in what turned into a hostage situation in the Grand Oaks Subdivision, an upscale community just south of the Ole Miss Campus.

Home video obtained exclusively by WREG News Channel 3 shows a woman, now identified by police as the family's housekeeper, running for cover after gunshots rang out from inside the home.

She told police the suspect Bilethon Autry shot and killed his brother Chalie Hodges. The father was still in the house, hiding in the home's attic.

Police tried to make contact by calling the suspect's mobile phone, but he did not answer.

Police say at one point Autry walked into the gragage and fired a shot at officers, but missed.

The SWAT team got the orders to move in, where they found Autry in the kitchen, still armed. "They were able to forcibly take the individual into custody without firing shots," says Chief Mike Martin with the Oxford Police Department.

Officers rescued the father from the attic. He was not injured.

Police say they were told by family members, Autry suffers from mental problems and had just recently been released from a psychiatric facility.
