Mosquito Spraying Begins in Shelby County

( Memphis 6/22/2009) The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes June 22. The practice, known as adulticiding, is designed to prevent potential outbreaks of the west nile virus.
Workers from vector control will be out Monday from 8:30 - 11:30 p.m. in the following zip codes: 38103, 38104, 38105, 38107, 38108, 38112, and 38127.
The health department warns people with asthma or breathing problems should remain indoors while the fogging trucks are spraying in their areas. People who do not want their homes sprayed are asked to call the health department at (901) 324-5547 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
In addition the health department advises the following action to further prevent mosquito bites and possible west nile infections: - Wear DEET-containing mosquito repellants according to label directions. This is also recommended by the CDC. - Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs. Citizens are asked to check their property for objects that collect rainwater and either drain or dispose of the water (such as old tires, empty flower pots, buckets, toys, and tin cans) and either drain or dispose of the water - Install or repair window and door screens - Empty, clean and refill birdbaths and small wading pools weekly - Repair failed septic systems - Repair leaky outside faucets - Clean rain gutters and downspouts
