FAST FACTS:
  • First Mayoral debate brings out nine potential candidates
  • Candidates not official until after filing deadline
  • Already political gloves are off

(Memphis 8/27/09) For the first time, Memphis mayoral candidates squared off Thursday night and sparks flew!

The nine potential candidates at the debate answered tough questions and had to dodge distractions -- including candidates refusals to answer questions, rambling answers, heated exchanges, forgotten statements and several other humorous moments.

Several candidates came out swinging -- taking shots at sitting Mayors Myron Lowery and AC Wharton. Lowery was asked about his two lawsuits against his former employers. Meantime, Wharton was dubbed the "tapioca of candidates", referring to his non-confrontational style. Wharton also took umbrage to Carol Chumney's remark regarding county response during the recent round of storms. Wharton said Chumney "only popped up when the cameras were around". Often called a spoiler, "Prince Mongo" took home the humor award, saying "We need to take all the political turds and put them in the toilet and flush them out". Despite gloves coming off and distractions shifting focus, candidates felt the debate was a success.
