Fast Facts:
(Memphis 8/3/09) He wanted the job, and now it's his.
For years, Myron Lowery flirted with the idea of running for Mayor of Memphis. But he never did, since just about everybody thought Willie Herenton was unbeatable. Now that Herenton has retired, Lowery automatically becomes Mayor Pro-Tem for 90 days.
Mayor Lowery is already proposing big changes. Current City Attorney Elbert Jefferson is refusing to resign, and a court hearing will be held Wednesday on his issue. But in the meantime, Lowery will nominate former US Attorney Veronica Coleman Davis as Director of the Legal Department, and Deputy Director of the department. City Council members must approve anybody nominated for a division directorship, but deputy directors are hired and fired by the Mayor. Lowrery will also nominate former Memphis City Councilman Jack Sammons as Chief Administrative Officer. The CAO is perhaps the second most powerful person in City Hall, responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of government.
Lowery has also named former Memphis news woman Donna Davis as his chief of communications. Davis started her job on Monday afternoon.
City Council will meet on Tuesday morning, August 3, at 8:30am to vote on the Lowery nominees.
