Lowery Reacts To Herenton Labeling Him Reckless
FAST FACTS:
  • Mayor Pro Tem reacts to former Mayor's statement he's reckless
  • Lowery says if Herenton runs for seat he vacated it won't keep him out of race
  • Lowery says Herenton is pulling a publicity and media stunt
(Memphis 08/13/2009) - Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery says there will be no name calling from him in the race for mayor, not even if he's on the receiving end.

Lowery is reacting to a statement from his predecessor, former Mayor Willie Herenton said he was pulling a petition to run in the race because of the city was moving backwards.

He said, "Myron's reckless style of leadership. He must be stopped."

Lowery said that's quite the opposite.

Lowery said, "My style of governing this city is an open style of leadership. I've asked our records be open to the media. I've opened up city hall to the public. That's my style of leadership."

Lowery said he is in the race to stay and won't back out just because Herenton may also run.

"Citizens are free to make up their own choice about what the mayor is doing. I've said this many times. This is just more confusion. The mayor has a lack of credibility. He says one thing and he does another," said Lowery.

As for limiting the powers of the mayor pro tem, Lowery said Herenton created the scenario that allowed him to be replaced. He believes Herenton pulling a petition to run for the seat he vacated is nothing short of a stunt.

Lowery said, "It may be what it is. If he is still dedicating himself to run for Congress, why run again, now? Why resign? Our citizens are smart and are not going to be fooled by publicity stunts and media stunts like this."
