(MEMPHIS 10/29/2009) -- Memphis Police say a second grader brought a loaded gun to Kate Bond Elementary School Thursday.
The second grader was taken to juvenile court, and police say their investigation is ongoing.
Principal Lyle Conley sent a letter home to parents Thursday which said in part, "This morning we discovered that a student brought a gun to school. Please be assured that school administrators located it very quickly, and that no students were injured in this extremely isolated incident. Weapons of any kind are prohibited on school campuses, so MPD was immediately dispatched and this student was strictly disciplined in accordance with board policy."
The letter also asked parents "to assist us by checking your child's belongings each morning to see that inappropriate items are not brought to school."
The letter did not say whether the gun was loaded, where the gun was found, or the age or grade of the student involved.
Some parents told WREG News Channel 3 they appreciated getting the letter, but would have liked to see more details. "I wish they had given more info than hey a kid brought a gun to school, we found it," said one parent as he picked up his child Thursday.
Other adults picking up their students said the parents of the second grader who brought the loaded gun to school need to answer some tough questions. "Really the person I think is at fault here is the parents for not paying attention," said Tabitha Jacques.
