FAST FACTS:
(Southaven, MS 01-29-12) - Chuck Roberts is a commercial real estate agent and a deal he did last year have some asking questions because of its ties to Southaven City Hall and Mayor Greg Davis.
“I'm glad I didn't have anything to do with this,” said Jimmy Dodson as he laughed.
Dodson sold a 20-acre plot of land on Swinnea Road to a company owned by Chuck Roberts for $325,000. According to the Commercial Appeal, Roberts, who is a friend of the mayor, turned around the same day and sold the plot of land to the City of Southaven for $370,000.
That’s a profit of $45,000. Dodson heard rumors that the city may be interested, but said he didn't get a straight answer when he asked.
“I was under the understanding that I was selling it to a group of investors,” said Dodson.
He says he would have sold the property to the city for the same price as he did to Roberts, had he known the city wanted it. He says he suspected something was shady after the closing date was rescheduled three or four times.
“It wouldn't have transferred that day and automatically transferred the next day so there had to be something going on between somebody,” said Dodson.
The investigation by the Commercial Appeal also revealed another deal between Mayor Davis and Roberts. In 2006, they bought a luxury condo In Miramar, FL together for almost $500,000.
All the dealings between Davis and local businessmen like Roberts, has Dodson concerned.
“That’s not ethical in my opinion,” said Dodson. “I don't live in Southaven. I'm not a Southaven voter, but if I were, I believe I would be changing things.”
The Commercial Appeal also investigated other links between Mayor Davis and Roberts and his business partners.
Dodson told News Channel 3 that no federal agents have come to question him. He says if they do, he'll tell them the truth.
Chuck Roberts did not return our phone calls on Sunday.
