Flames erupted in a home just south of Millington late Thursday night sending one family running from their home. The fire broke out in a vacant home the 5800 block of Lake Port Drive.
The fire quickly spread to a home next door that had people living inside. Fire officials say the second home is salvageable, the vacant home is a total loss.
Fire officials say the heat was so intense it compromised the gas lines coming from the homes. Fire crews as well as MLGW officials were on the scene well into the morning hours to make sure the flames did not spread to nearby homes.
A fire investigator was called to the scene to determine the cause. Stay tuned to WREG News Channel 3 for updates.
