FAST FACTS:
  • Day 4 for thousands of folks without power
  • MLGW working 24/7 to restore electricity
  • As of late Tuesday night, 15,000 still without power
(Memphis 6/16/2009) For the fourth night in a row, thousands of Memphians are still in the dark, tossing and turning inside hot homes without even a fan to cool them off.

Cornelius Montgomery allowed our cameras inside the South Memphis home he shares with his grandmother. The shades are drawn. He and his grandma have been using candles to light the house.

The hardest part, he says, is trying to get to sleep.

"You can't lay down to go to sleep," he said.

Since Friday, MLGW's restored power to more than 140,000 customers. And in some of the neighborhoods hardest hit, there are signs of progress. Folks are clearing away debris and for many business owners, thankfully, they're back up and running.

"We're raring to go," said Rudy Grisanti, owner of Dino's.

It opened today for the first time since the storm. The power was out all weekend during the restaurant's busiest days.

"It was like oh my goodness, let's hope it comes back quick," said Grisanti.

He estimates they lost about $5,000 and hundreds more in supplies.

"Anything you have to throw away is right out your pocket, stuff you'll never get back," he said.

This all in an industry already suffering in the recession

Back on Clairmont Circle, Montgomery hopes MLGW meets its self-imposed Friday deadline to get all power restored.

"I'll be happy when it comes back on," he said.
