(Memphis 10/19/2009) A school security guard at Northside High School went before a judge Monday to face charges of statutory rape by an authority figure.

29-year old Mario Harris is accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student at the school over a six month period.

Police say in at least two instances Harris and the 17-year-old girl met in the security office in the basement of the school.

Harris didn't want to answer our questions about the case Monday and his attorney says so far he hasn't had a chance to talk to his client in detail about the allegations against him.

"This just happened over the weekend and that is not the best time to get information together," said Ted Hansom.

Investigators say the student's mother became suspicious something was going on when her daughter received a basket of chocolate covered strawberries and a cell phone from Harris.

Police say the cell phone also contained some suggestive text messages from Harris.

So far, Harris has denied the charges, but cannot explain the gifts.

In written statement released over the weekend, Memphis City Schools said Harris had been relieved of his duties.

Harris was also a reserve officer with the Memphis police department. He has been fired from that job as well. He is scheduled to be back in court next month.
