Fullilove Explains Why She's Holding A Fundraiser
FAST FACTS:
  • Councilwoman Janis Fullilove hosts fundraiser
  • Fullilove posted invitations on Facebook, but did no specify cause
  • Small group appears in support

(Memphis 7/24/09) Council woman Janis Fullilove's staunchest supporters aren't giving up on her, despite the controversies, but is public support still there?

The embattled councilwoman held a fundraiser at a night club in Hickory Hill Friday night, but she says the money won't be used to pay for her mounting legal fees, but rather for her next campaign. She urged supporters to donate at least 25 dollars for her fundraiser and her campaign manager promises everything about the event was on the up and up

Legally not allowed to drive, Fullilove rode to her fundraiser. She initially dodged questions about how event donations would be spent, but eventually explained what the money was for.

"I'm trying to get ready for my next election," said Fullilove. "I have bills that I didn't pay from my last election. I'm just have a fundraiser, it's nothing else. I'm not trying to pay any legal fees, or anything like that, nothing at all."

Fullilove faces mounting legal fees due to DUI's and an indictment for license forgery. Her problems stem from admitted prescription drug and alcohol abuse. For weeks, she sent out mass invitations on Facebook, asking for donations, but did not specify the cause. Her supporters say it was a chance to see a different side of her.

"She is doing great, she is doing great, her health is fine, everything is fine, she's doing wonderful. I tell a lot of people we fall down, but we get back up," said Kenny Lee. "She is the same Janis Fullilove she was when you all voted for her."

Her supporters put on a happy face, but to the outside she appeared shaken.

"I'm not doing anything for me, it's for the people in the community and I don't know why you're doing this to me, I really don't," said Fullilove, with tears welling in her eyes.

One fellow councilman came to support her, but ultimately, the event drew a small crowd.

"I think it's a success, if we had two people in there it's a success," said Gloria Watkins, Fullilove's campaign manager.

Watkins went on to say the donations will be accounted for, and reported. Fullilove says donations will also go to help local groups, for things like school supplies.
