(Memphis, TN 10/13/2009) Vandalism hits the University of Memphis. And we're not talking about just mere graffiti.

Police say someone spray painted swastikas on a house that a Jewish fraternity plans to move into. Both the University and Memphis Police are taking this incident very seriously. Prank or not, whomever's responsible will be charged.

The rain may have helped wash them away, but what was spray-painted on 3604 Midland Avenue is something students on fraternity row say they won't forget.

Jacob Bacaner lives in the frat house next to the one that was vandalized. A red swastika was painted on a window next to the front door, another on a wall beneath the carport. Cleaning crews have since scrubbed it all away.

"I'm Jewish, so that was pretty intense, I did not know that went on around here," said Bacaner.

Zeta Beta Tau, a historically Jewish fraternity, has been making plans to move into this house for the past two years.

"It's not something anyone wants to see," said Zeta Beta Tau member Brian Moore.

He says the fraternity will come together to talk about the incident..

In a statement released by the fraternity, the president writes "We are saddened and concerned by this incident. We do not believe this is the act of any other fraternity or sorority."

Campus police aren't sure exactly what time it happened. It was reported around 11:00 a.m. and officials say the paint was still fresh when the investigation started.

"Intolerance like this, we condemn it, have no part in it whatsoever," said Curt Guenther, spokesperson for the University of Memphis.

Bacaner hopes the culprit realizes the damage stretches beyond the surface.

"It crosses lines," he said.

A spokesperson for Memphis Police tells us they have no leads yet. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.
