FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 10/1/2009) Last year, Memphis had a record number of domestic violence related homicides.
While the number of deaths has dropped significantly this year, victim's advocates are hoping to erase domestic abuse altogether.
Thursday morning, a domestic fight in southwest Memphis sent a man to the hospital with knife wounds to his face and hands and a woman to the jail for aggravated assault.
Neighbors didn't hear anything, but say there has been trouble here before.
"He been throwing folks out," said a neighbor.
In Shelby County, the number of domestic violence incidents that ended with murder has dropped from 34 last year to around 10 this year. However, domestic cases overall are up by about 10%.
In September, a Bartlett man was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and rape after he attacked his wife in front of their four young children.
Victim's advocates believe there are many more cases of abuse that go unreported.
"60% of the simple assaults someone getting beaten up. 60% of those happen in a home or between people in a family or household this year," said Deborah Clubb with the Memphis Area Women's Council.
The Memphis Area Women's Council is hoping a new domestic violence court, that is making it easier for victims, will encourage more people to get help.
They are also hoping a rally Thursday night will make more people aware of the resources that are available and get more in the community involved.
"People have to be brave enough to step up and say to someone if you are in trouble I am willing to help you and here is what i know you can do," said Clubb.
Clubb says she hopes the number of domestic calls actually goes up, because that means more victims are calling police and trying to get out of their battering environment.
The Erasing Violence Rally is being held at Lindenwood Christian Curch on Union. It begins at 5:30. For more on efforts to fight domestic violence visit
