FAST FACTS:
(Ripley, TN 10/7/2009) A Mid-South doctor is accused of attempting to rape one of his own patients.
Dr. Robert Magee, a general practitioner at the Ripley Medical Clinic in Lauderdale County was indicted by a grand jury Monday. He faces charges of Attempted Rape and Sexual Battery.
WREG reached Dr. Magee over the phone. He denies the allegations and says he will continue practicing medicine.
"I really don't know what to think about it, I really like Dr. Magee, I think he's an excellent doctor," said Betty Jackson. She's been a patient of Magee's for six years.
According to the grand jury indictment, in September of 2008, Dr. Magee attempted to rape a female patient during an exam at the clinic. He's also accused of having sexual contact with her without her consent.
We've learned the accuser is in her 20s and had only been a patient of Magee's for about a year.
"It's not something I would think is true, but you just never know these days," said Jackson.
Dr. Magee was arraigned Wednesday. He posted a $15,000 bond. A worker at his clinic tells us he'll be back on the job Monday.
For now, he can continue to see his patients. The Tennessee Department of Health tells us criminal charges do not prompt automatic action against a health professional's license.
However, a spokesperson says the state is aware of the charges against Dr. Magee and it is reviewing its options.
The Ripley physician got his medical license in 1978. Records show he's never been disciplined.
"Knowing his personality, I wouldn't see him being that type of person," said Jackson.
She says he deserves his day in court. In the meantime, she will continue to see him.
WREG spoke to the alleged victim's husband. He tells us she's coping as best she can..
Dr. Magee's trial date is set for February.
