FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 9/216/2009) Debates aren't supposed to be held in three rings.
They aren't supposed to be political versions of the Jerry Springer show. Debates are supposed to be places where voters have a chance to look at candidates running for office and decide which one they like.
In this debate nobody was wearing a wig and goggles. You had four people who were trying to explain why they were the best people to be Mayor. Openng statements from all four were basically the same...all of them say they have passion about this city, and want to make things better.
It is impossible to take a 2 hour debate and try to whittle it down to a two minute story. There were some, well not fireworks, but some heat in this debate. Charles Carpenter asked A C Wharton why he had several people on his staff who had been fired because of unethical behavior. Wharton answered he'll listen to anybody who has anything to offer. Carol Chumney claimed Wharton didn't follow proper procedure when he used the County Attorney to look into whether Wharton received favors in getting his car registration. Wharton said he was following the ethics rules.
Lowery attacked both Wharton and Carpenter for appearing on a local radio talk show where the host used the N word to describe some segments of the African American community. Wharton said he was wrong for not saying anything...it was a mistake he would not make again. Carpenter claims his message isn't being told by the local media...so he used this show simply as a place to get his message out. Carpenter also buys advertisements on the hosts show and website.
The next debate will be on October 14th...one day before the election.
- Threatened legal action to stop debate never materializes
- Chumney, Carpenter, Lowery and Wharton debate
- One more debate scheduled for October 14th on WREG
