(Memphis 11/3/2009) -- WREG News Channel 3 has obtained a copy of the warrant used to raid the Memphis Animal Shelter.
The warrant cites a case where a dog was brought in looking healthy and in less than a month was found dead in its cage.
In fact, the warrant contains a report stating three dogs died from starvation and their deaths were a direct result of lack of care at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
You can view photos of the dog when it was brought in and shortly after via the link to the left.
The warrant says an animal autopsy shows the dog had not in eaten in three days, and had no fat on its body.
The warrant says numerous emails were sent to Ernest Alexander, Kenneth Moody, Angela Middleton and Ivan Russell detailing conditions, even including photos. Alexander is shelter administrator, Moody is a division director, Middleton is a Veterinarian and Russell is a Field Supervisor
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton has assembled an Animal Shelter Task Force. One member is Janet Hooks, who oversaw the shelter during the time of the raid.
So far, Wharton has not fired anyone from the shelter.
The shelter is open again and the original employees have returned to their jobs.
It is possible charges could be filed once the investigation is complete.
Animal activists reacted to the pictures Tuesday, calling them disturbing and shocking. "I would hope people would look at this and be just as horrified and go, you know what, I don't want to live in a community that treats animals that way," says Cindy Sanders with a group called Community Action for Animals.
Sanders say it may be tempting to look away from the photos, but she says for far too long people have turned their backs on the shelter's problems. "Animal groups have been brining these problems to the forefront for years, but a picture is a whole different thing," she says.
A vigil will be held Thursday night at 6 pm.
