FAST FACTS:

  • Elderly man nearly beaten to death with skillet
  • Robber tricked her way into house
  • Surveillance video may lead police to suspect

(Covington, TN 10/20/2009) The bleeding has stopped, but Lonnie Craig Jr.'s eye is still gashed and bruised. And there are stitches and bruises are all over his head.

His wounds are the result of nearly being beaten to death during a robbery at his Covington home.

"When I knew anything I guess she hit me with a skillet," remembers Craig.

The female suspect beat Craig with a cast iron skillet she spotted on his stove.

Craig says he didn't know the woman who tricked him into letting her in the back door by claiming the postman left a box at his old BBQ restaurant on Highway 51. Once insideĀ…

"She gave me the package and I looked at it and shook it and wasn't anything in it."

By that time it was too late. The woman had grabbed the skillet off the stove and hit him from behind.

Craig found himself on the ground next to the refrigerator.

"I was fixing to try and get up i guess she must have thought I was going to be able to fight back and she went out the door. "

The cold-hearted crook made off with Craig's wallet that had 90-dollars and a couple credit cards inside. Somehow Craig found the strength to get to his phone and dial 911.

Neighbor Roberta Boyd saw the woman walk in and out and never suspected a thing.

"When I really found out what happened it really hurt. That's close to me. I live by myself too."

Investigators tell us they could be close to cracking this case. The crook was apparently caught on camera using one of Craig's credit cards at a local bank ATM.

"I hope they catch her and everything," snaps Craig.
