( Memphis 11/4/2009) There they sat, all scrubbed and pretty.
Four people want to be the next Shelby County Mayor. This was the first chance for anybody to hear the candidates speak about what they thought were the issues. And they all agreed on the most important issue facing Shelby County right now. The Med.
Republicans don't carry a lot of weight on the commission, but Doctor George Flinn is saying look beyond his party affiliation and look at his experience. "I am the only person who wants this office that has had 30 years in the medical profession," Flinn said. "When it comes to the Med, I feel I am better prepared than any other person here to deal with the funding crisis."
Commissioner J.W.Gibson says he's been out in front of the Med problem for years, being the one who pushed for a committee to look at the problem. Commissioner Joe Ford touts promised to have a plan ready to go the Monday after being named Mayor. Former Collierville Mayor Linda Kerley said she's worked with the feds and state officials for years and knows how to get things done.
There could be others who want the job, but they might want to think about it. Commissioner James Harvey called the entire meeting with the candidates a nice little piece of fluff. But, Harvey said, "It was pretty much a waste of time because certainly, I know who I'm going to vote for. I think the others know who they're going to vote for as well.
Commissioner Henri Brooks felt differently. " I saw some passion regarding some of the issues that are right on the front burner. I have passion with issues so I can relate with that."
The vote comes Monday, and it won't be easy. To appoint a County Mayor, only 9 Commissioners will be able to vote...and it will take 7 votes for a candidate to win.
