FAST FACTS:
( Memphis, 7/27/2009) The chairman of Shelby County's Republican Party is calling for State Senator Paul Stanley to resign from the senate.
It comes one week after state investigators say the Germantown lawmaker admitted to a sexual relationship with a 22 year old intern.
The intern's ex-boyfriend is charged with extortion, after allegedly demanding $10,000 from the senator, in exchange for not going to the media with explicit pictures of the intern reportedly taken by Stanley.
The call to resign from Shelby County Republicans came late Monday afternoon.
In a news release, Party Chairman, Lang Wiseman, says, "The time has come for this spectacle to end."
Stanley has not appeared in public since the details of the alleged affair broke last week.
The married, father of two also hasn't responded to phone calls or e-mails seeking comment.
In his statement, Wiseman admits Stanley's resignation could diminish the influence of the party.
That's because if the lawmaker should step down, a replacement would be chosen by the Democrat-controlled Shelby County Commission.
However, Wiseman says, "As more and more details continue to surface, it is clear the time has come for Paul to resign his seat in the Senate."
Wiseman adds, "We all deserve the chance at forgiveness...but forgiveness is not the same thing as freedom from consequence."
Late this afternoon, a spokesman for Senate Chairman, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey said there were no plans today to ask Senator Stanley to resign his seat.
