FAST FACTS:
( Memphis 6/30/2009) Memphis Police are on the hunt for a stolen Lexus SUV tied to a burglary in Central Gardens.
Police say the crook actually snuck inside the home while a family of four was sound asleep. It happened near South Willett and Carr. The family says the severe weather is partly to blame for what happened.
The recent storm that knocked out power also fried their alarm system. With that not working and the air conditioner blasting, the family hardly heard a thing.
"[My husband] heard a noise, assumed someone's car door shut, happens quite a bit, so he didn't think to get up and investigate," said the woman whose house was broken into.
Out of fear, she asked we not identify her. Both she and her husband and two teenage kids were sound asleep in their home, when someone used a crow bar to pry into their house.
The sign, "This area under video surveillence," didn't seem to bother the thief. Neither did the two cars parked in the driveway.
"The gall to come in while you're sleeping is really really scary," said the woman.
The sound of the cat meowing around 4:00 a.m. woke her up, she came downstairs and looked around.
"I looked up and said, 'Oh my God, tv's gone. Oh no. And I turned around, my car keys, they're gone, oh no! My purse! Oh no this is terrible!" she said.
The thief even stole a carton of ice cream out of their freezer, then loaded everything up into the family's 2000 Lexus SUV and drove off.
This mom is just glad no one came downstairs during the break-in.
"I have a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old, it could've been anything," she said.
Her family's added extra security, a new metal doorframe, even upgraded their alarm system. But it's been one week and police have no leads.
She says the stuff that was stolen is nothing compared to her family's sense of security.
"The kids are not feeling safe, they can't sleep in our house. My daughter has someone home every night or sleeps at a friend's house," she said.
She hopes police catch whoever's responsible before they victimize someone else.
