FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 10/26/2009) An NBA Hall of Famer and six-time championship winner could be headed to the Memphis Grizzlies.
According to the Commercial Appeal, the all-time NBA leading scorer is considering a consultant position on its coaching staff.
"He's one of the greatest superstars of all time, most people look at Michael but I think Kareem," said basketball fan Darnell Tate.
The seven-foot two star, famous for his trademark skyhook shot, managed to entertain folks both on and off the court.
The six-time MVP winner could be bringing some of his star power to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Basketball fan Darnell Tate has his fingers crossed.
"We'll just keep our hopes up like we did with Mr. Iverson," said Tate.
The last time the 62-year-old made headlines in Memphis was last year when he received a National Civil Rights award at Fed Ex Forum. He is currently under contract with the LA Lakers, but the Commercial Appeal reported Monday Memphis asked and received permission to talk to him about possibly joining its staff.
His experience and mentoring ability could help mold the Griz's three centers.
"Because it's a young team, it's a new franchise," said basketball fan Dwayne Williams. "They've got to get out there and show people something."
He actually met the NBA star at the airport last year.
"I shook his hand, that was kinda neat," he said.
He says the name recognition alone could at least help fill some of those empty seats..
"Would it lead us to a championship? I don't know, but it would help," said Williams.
