(Memphis 10/15/2009) A C Wharton has declared victory in the race to replace Willie Herenton.

Wharton led from the time early votes were counted.

Mayor Pro-Tem Myron Lowery conceded to Wharton and said he will continue to work for the city on the city council.

With 100% of precincts reporting, Wharton received 65,491 votes or 60% of the total vote.

Memphis Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery received 19,625 votes or 18% of the total vote.

As the first returns from the city's precincts were tabulated, Wharton maintained his lead.

Former state legislator and Memphis City Council member Carol Chumney was third with 10% of the vote.
