(Memphis 8/11/2009) - Carol Chumney is on a mission to become Mayor of Memphis and enjoying every minute of it.

"Things are going really well. It's a busy time. I love getting out and meeting people, preparing for the change in Memphis. It's gonna be exciting." she says.

It's an excitement Carol Chumney knows all to well.

She was a major contender in the last Mayoral election, pushing her message of change.

This time she has added the slogan 'Count on Carol'.

"We have seen a lot of drama in politics in this community. The last election they said she is boring. But you know what, boring sounds pretty good right not. We have seen a lot of drama. I think folks would like us to focus on the issues that really make a difference in this city."

Chumney, who spent 13 years in the state legislature and 4 on the Memphis city council, says has the experience to be Mayor.

What she wants to turn around in the city is the racial division.

"We can come together and heal and move forward as a community. We have tremendous gifts and talented people in this city."

A graduate of White Station High School, Chumney remembers her days on the basketball team.

She is a strong advocate for public education.

"I know education is so important because it levels the playing field."

If elected, Chumney would be the first woman to become Mayor of Memphis.

You might say she has been getting fit for this, for the last two years.

In the latest Health Fitness Magazine there is a profile of her dramatic weight loss, 35 pounds in 18 months.

"I started slowly, walking and running a little bit at a time."

Carol Chumney says it's the same type of commitment she will take to the Mayor's office.

"We have a great opportunity now in this city. We have got to seize it and move ahead with it and I think that's what's gonna happen."

Carol Chumney says the first thing she would do if elected is get together the best team possible to move the city forward.

She would also reach out to the city council and make management changes at the police department to fight crime.

Carol Chumney is 48 years old.

She graduated from White Station High School and the University of Memphis, where she also completed law school.

She now owns her own business, The Carol Chumney Law Firm.

Chumney is single with no children.
