(Memphis 7/29/2010) A Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office white van drove off around 8:30 PM Wednesday, hours after a body was discovered in a wooded area near Hacks Cross and Winchester.
Police are saying very little, however family members say police confirmed to them that the man found dead in the woods is former NBA Player Lorenzen Wright.
Wright had been missing for ten days. His family filed a missing person's report with Collierville Police. His mother told WREG News Channel 3 it was highly unusual for Wright not to contact his family members. She worried something terrible had happened.
Fellow ballplayer Penny Hardaway was on the scene Wednesday. He said he wanted to be there to share his condolences with Wright's family. "When the reports started that he was missing, and he didn't come out and say, 'Hey, I'm ok,' That's when I started to worry," Hardaway said. Hardaway called Wright a good friend who was a "warrior" on the basketball court.
Police have not yet released any details about they found in the wooded area, but sources tell WREG, detectives found Wright's identification along with his body.
The Commercial Appeal reports the following: "In the early hours of July 19, a Germantown dispatcher received a 911 call from Lorenzen Wright's cell phone. The dispatcher heard a garbled male voice utter an expletive, then at least 10 gunshots."
A spokesperson in Germantown tells WREG News Channel 3, "Germantown has turned over a 911 tape to the MPD in reference to the Lorenzen Wright case."
