UofM Suspends Fraternities Officials Short on Specifics Members Will have to Attend Risk Management Training

(Memphis 11/9/2009) All ten University of Memphis fraternities are under suspension, after school leaders say a series of events led to the need for a "wake-up call."

"We haven't had any real serious incidents, but we felt it was important to nip things in the bud before we really did have serious problems," explained Dean of Students Dr. William Porter.

Porter was short on specifics, instead saying there have been issues across the board.

Recently we've reported several fraternity-related issues. Last month police say they caught two members of the Kappa Alpha fraternity drinking underage, and trying to steal a horse statue from someone's porch.

Swastikas were found on a house the historically Jewish Fraternity Zeta Beta Tau had expressed interest in buying.

There was also a small fire recently at the Alpha Tau Omega House.

Fraternity insiders have tipped us off to fights and large parties, but Dean Porter would not confirm the validity of those incidents.

"Generally if you look at our history here, we haven't had too many problems even with their social activities," Porter said. "We got concerned that could be a problem if we didn't really step in and take some action."
