DUVALL LANDING, Tenn. (WREG-TV) - Three people were hospitalized late Monday after two tugboats collided on the Mississippi River.
The accident happened at river mile 775, near the mouth of the Hatchie River at the Tipton and Lauderdale County line.
Chief Donna Turner with the Tipton County Sheriff's Department says the call came in around 9:00 p.m. Monday night. The U.S. Coast Guard set up a command center at Duvall Landing, northwest of Drummonds. Crews from several agencies responded, including rescue squads from several surrounding counties.
The three people who were hospitalized weren't injured in the actual collision. Turner says they came into contact with hazardous materials that were inside one of the barges. The men were taken to Methodist North Hospital in Raleigh.
The U.S. Coast Guard is now investigating the cause of the accident.
