Tuesday, Mayor A C Wharton signed an order to make city government more transparent. Wharton says he's making good on a promise for a more open government.
With his signature Mayor Wharton expanded your access to public records and public officials.
Without pointing fingers, Wharton says too often governments are viewed as being closed off and he wants citizens to know about the good and bad going on inside city hall.
"Lets just start early on so it's never perceived of trying to hold something. Don't even let it get started," said Mayor Wharton.
Wharton has already taking steps toward making his administration more transparent.
Last week 24/7 surveillance cameras were installed at the city's animal shelter. The shelter is under investigation for animal neglect.
The order signed Tuesday means the public requests for public records will be acknowledged within 5 business days. That is two days shorter than required by the state.
The city will also begin posting the salaries of all city employees and as well as all city contracts on it's website.
Many we spoke say its a welcome change for city government.
"I think its a good thing, because it kind of gives the government accountability to the people they are representing," said one lady.
"That would be great so we can find out exactly where all the money is going who is making all the money," said another man.
The mayor's office also plans to deliver important city information via Twitter, Facebook & You Tube and hold virtual town meetings to better communicate with everyone in the city.
"We must adapt to the times that is what we are doing with the Twitter and Facebook outlets," said Mayor Wharton.
The city also plans to list all properties bought and sold in the city on its website.
