I-40 Exit Ramp Poses Problems
FAST FACTS:
  • Traffic Slowdown Near Downtown Due To Snow & Ice
  • Treacherous Travel Along Interstate Exit Ramps
  • Drivers Try To Avoid Wrecking Cars & Trucks

(Memphis, TN/February 8, 2010) It's a scenic wintry view of the Hernando DeSoto Bridge as eastbound traffic along Interstate 40 comes into Memphis, but look a little closer and you'd see it was also treacherous travel for drivers.

Adam Bryant was trying to take the Riverside Drive exit ramp into downtown.

Bryant said, "I came from Lakeland and there were no issues. The only thing that gave me concern was when I hit the ramp up here."

The ramp was covered with snow and ice and considerably slowed down traffic. Drivers had a difficult time maneuvering even with sand and salt trucks on the roadways.

Bryant said, "It was a little icy. I went about five miles per hour so I was thankful nobody was behind me riding my bumper and anything. That was the only thing that was a little bit scary."

It was kind of scary for other drivers trying to brave the morning rush hour traffic. The snow and ice caused some drivers such as Perry Coleman to almost lose control of their cars and trucks.

Coleman said, "It was pretty bad. Ice was everywhere. But when you hit the overpass, especially the bridges, I guess the ice interacting with the salt and its not doing what it's supposed to do because I fish tailed a little bit trying to get to work."

That's why Coleman eventually parked his car moved to Plan B to get to work.

Coleman said, "...Your next step is walking? Right, up that hill. Good luck."
