FAST FACTS:
(Shelby County, TN 2/11/10) It was a cold morning for Shelby County fire crews.
They arrived at a home on Hatch Circle to heavy smoke. Homeowner Cain Carson says he turned on a space heater, right before he left home for work.
Carson's daughter and grandson were still inside the house sleeping. Fire crews say the daughter smelled the smoke and got up to investigate. That's when she saw flames.
Carson said his daughter went to go get his grandson and they were able to make it out the house just in time as the flames began to spread.
It was a chilly 23 degrees when fire crews arrived on scene. They got to work immediately. But Battalion Chief Gene Adams said it took crews longer than usual to get to the fire because they encountered several problems
"The cold weather and they had a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff inside the house that it was hard to get in, they just have a bunch of stuff," said Adams.
Unable to get out was the family pet, a lab named Max. And a Shelby County firefighter had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for chest pains. Fire crews say they believe it was likely that space heater that started the fire. They say with temps this low; heaters are the likely cause of a lot of fires.
"People put a lot of things next to space heaters they catch fire. Good thing the lady was here that got us here a little bit quicker than if she hadn't of been here," added Adams.
