FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 1/15/2010) A native Memphian and former NBA first round draft pick is off the court tonight and faces a date with a judge.
23 Year old Shawne Williams was booked Friday on felony drug charges. Police say Williams was one of 24 people indicted this week as part of Memphis Police Department's "Operation Lockdown."
Williams, who starred in his one season with the University of Memphis, faces conspiracy charges and possession with intent to sell a codeine-based syrup. In all, Williams faces eight felony drug charges. He was indicted Tuesday, just hours after the 6' 9" forward was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the New Jersey Nets.
This isn't Williams' first run-in with police. While playing with the Indiana Pacers in 2007, Williams was arrested on marijuana possession charges. A year later, a Memphis man wanted for murder, was arrested in Indiana after being found in williams SUV.
Many saw this week's trade to New Jersey as a last-chance for the former Tiger to get his career back on track. In fact, he hadn't played in a single game this year with Dallas, after management there asked him to leave the team. But Friday afternoon, just as news of Williams' indictment broke, the Nets announced the team was waiving Williams.
Shelby County jail records show Williams turned himself into officers and was booked around 2:15pm Friday. His bond was set at $16,000.
