(Memphis 3/11/10) The search for a man whose canoe capsized on the Mississippi River has now turned into a recovery effort.

The United States Coast Guard says a 62 year-old man and his friend fell into the water around two o'clock Thursday afternoon. The friend swam safely to the Arkansas shore, but the 62 year-old disappeared. Authorities believe he was not wearing a life vest. They say the mans age, and the water temperature contribute to calling off a rescue search.

"The river itself has a current of about 3 to 5 miles an hour, which is always significant no matter what size boat you're in," says USCG Lt. Jason Erickson. "We just want to reiterate that if you're on the water, wear your life jacket at all times."

Local authorities will resume searching for the missing boater at daybreak.
