FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 5/19/2009) The mother of the 15-year-old charge with 1st degree murder in the shooting death of his Raleigh Egypt High school mate pushes our news camera and microphone away as she leaves Shelby County Juvenile Court.
Police say her son had blood on his clothing and admitted to shooting 18-year-old Daniel "Levi" Brown. A juvenile court referee ordered the 15 year old to stay in custody until a hearing in two weeks. She will decide then if he'll be tried as an adult.
The spot where Levi was gunned down walking home from school is now a memorial. Classmates from his senior class have left messages and prayers along with stuffed animals at the site.
"Levi had so much to do, to want to do. And, it's crazy to lose somebody just so early. My brother wasn't but 4 months from being 19. He's a senior, last year in school," said Janice Brown, victim's sister.
A day after the shooting, Memphis police have a strong presence in and around Raleigh Egypt High. Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an argument that started at school a week ago. They say yesterday, the 15-year-old went to a neighbor's house and got a gun to settle the dispute once and for all. Today, Raleigh Egypt students handed out "Stop the Violence" ribbons during class.
"We ain't got anything else to do but get our education. And, we can't get our education if we got violence everywhere," said Terrance Curtis, Raleigh Egypt 11th grader.
Yesterday students watched as the violence escalated into the death of one of their classmates and the possible imprisonment of another for life.
"It's not right. It's not right the way they did it. It's not right and I'm sorry for his family, too. I just wish I could have been there more for him. I just wish I could have been there," said Isaac Brown, victim's brother.
The victim's family says they knew nothing about Brown being involved in an argument at school last week.
